Project description:
The project “Development of Technical Documentation for the Use of Geothermal Energy in the Area of Veliko Korenovo – Veliko Korenovo GT-1” aims to increase the production of energy from renewable sources, reduce CO2 emissions and increase the security of supply. These goals will be achieved through the preparation of technical documentation for the use of geothermal energy, which is a prerequisite for the construction of wells and geothermal energy production, with the planned conjoined usage of geothermal energy (district heating and commercial use).
Geothermal energy obtained from the Korenovo GT – 1 well, will be used for heating purposes to supply the planned pool complex in Veliko Korenovo with thermal energy, Korenovo Business Zone, and greenhouse agricultural production in the Veliko Korenovo area. The city of Bjelovar as the applicant, and Terme Bjelovar d.o.o. and Elfa hf. from Iceland as project partners are the main target groups.
Predicted end users are users of the pool complex, entrepreneurs in the Korenovo Business Zone, farmers who will be utilizing geothermal energy for production activities, residents from the local area where the project is being implemented while increasing the air quality due to reduced CO2 emissions and economic development on the benefit of an entire community.
There are three activities through which the project will be implemented under Project Call 1, point 3.7.1.): 1. development of technical documentation for geothermal energy; 2. project management and administration, and 3. information and communication.
Goals and expected results of the project:
The project includes three activities:
- development of the technical documentation for geothermal energy projects;
- project management and administration activities;
- promotion and visibility activities related to the achievement of Output 2.2.
Through defined project activities, the outcomes and immediate results defined by the Call will be achieved. The essential documentation for the construction of a geothermal well will be prepared, utilized to increase the production of geothermal energy while reducing CO2 emissions annually. The main objective of the project is the production of energy to decrease carbon emissions and increase supply security. Therefore, the development of technical documentation is required to reach the stage of well construction and exploitation of geothermal energy in the defined area.
The project directly contributes to the achievement of program outcome 2: ” Increased renewable energy production”, due to the research which indicates that 25,920 MWh will be produced annually. Furthermore, the project contributes to the achievement of the second outcome indicator with the estimated reduction of annual CO2 emissions in the amount of 3,500 tons per year. Preparation of the essential technical documentation is a prerequisite for the immediate result 2.1 Installed capacity for production of geothermal energy in MW based on which the construction of a well with an installed capacity to produce geothermal energy of 3 MW will begin.
The direct effects of the project are technical documentation for the use of geothermal energy that will increase the use of renewable energy sources in the City of Bjelovar and improve the implementation capacity of Applicants and Partners through study visits to advise and provide examples of good practices (led by partners from Iceland). Through bilateral cooperation, objectives will be achieved. The indirect effects of the project are the possibility of further works and the construction of the well itself, exploration of the geothermal potential, and the production of geothermal energy with combined usage that will be accustomed used for several already identified purposes.

WORKING TOGETHER FOR A GREEN, COMPETITIVE AND INCLUSIVE EUROPE
The project “Development of technical documentation for the use of geothermal energy in the area of Veliko Korenovo – Korenovo GT-1” benefits from a € 258,2 thousand grant from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA Grants with national co-financing from the Republic of Croatia within the “Energy and Climate Change” Programme. The aim of the project is to increase energy production from renewable sources, reduce CO2 emissions and increase security of supply.
